ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Master of Psychology (MPsyc)(Clinical) is designed to provide the equivalent of the fifth and sixth years of training to work as a professional psychologist, now required for membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) specialist clinical College of the Society.

 

The course involves a research project, supervised practical placements, and course-work which emphasises the acquisition of professional skills. The program is equivalent to 24 subjects and may be completed in four semesters of full-time study, although most students take longer.

Admission to the program requires completion of an APS accredited four-year sequence in psychology, supportive referees' reports and a successful evaluation interview. 

 

Applicants with non-Australian qualifications must confirm the equivalence of their undergraduate studies with the Australian Psychological Society by writing to: Director of Membership Issues, APS, PO Box 126, Carlton South, VIC 3053

To meet the requirements of the APS, all MPsyc students undertake a set of core subjects:

Research Project (MPsyc) and Research Project and Thesis (MPsyc) (in the chosen specialist area)

Practical Placement I, II, and III (in the specialist area)

Advanced Counselling Psychology

Advanced Psychological Assessment

Professional Practice, Consultation and Evaluation

Clinical Specialist Subjects (for MPsyc Clinical)

Psychopathology and Management of Adult Problems I and II

Psychopathology and Management of problems in Families, Children and Adolescents

Psychopharmacology and Pharmacotherapy

1 MPsyc subject in health psychology (see below)

Clinical Elective Subject:  Any 1 Mpsyc subject in health or forensic psychology or any 2 MBA subjects in organisational psychology

Health Specialist Subjects (for MPsyc Health)

Health Psychology 1 and 2

Health Care Systems, Epidemiology, & Health Promotion

Health Elective Subjects: Any 3 of the Mpsyc subjects in clinical or forensic psychology

Forensic Specialist Subjects

Forensic Psychology 1 and 2

Advanced Criminal Profiling

Psycholopathology & Management of Adult Problems 1 & 2 

Psycholopathology & Management of Problems in Children, Adolescents & Families
