SDSU's American Language Institute, one
of the largest university-based ESL programs in the U.S., has been
training teachers of ESL since 1981.
Who will take this program?
Non-native and native teachers of English, both individuals and groups,
who are teaching or preparing to teach ESL/EFL in a non-English
speaking country. Individuals with at least an intermediate level of
English language proficiency.
What will participants gain?
The course focuses on methods and materials used to teach English as a
Second or Foreign Language to students of all ages. During this three-week program participants will be able to improve their own English
while observing the teaching styles of master teachers. The seminar
classes are taught by ALI master teachers who have advanced university
degrees in the field and many years of experience teaching in the US and
abroad. Guest speakers also share their expertise.

Participants will review recent
research in the ESL/EFL field. Teaching styles and motivating
techniques will be emphasized.

Master teachers will share
innovative techniques and methods for the ESL/EFL classroom in all
subject areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar.

Participants will get tips on
course and classroom organization, including curriculum design,
textbook adaptation, and original lesson planning.

Participants will improve their
English skills through classroom activities that may be adapted to
their own teaching situation.

Discussions, social activities,
and excursions will help participants increase intercultural
understanding and communication.

Participants will gain
information on textbooks and other materials for all levels of
proficiency.

The Institute's state-of-the-art
computer and language laboratories will be used.

Participants will observe English
language classes.
|
Participants have ongoing dialogs with
ALI teacher-mentors throughout the program.
The program includes 75 hours of instruction and related activities,
instructional materials and workbook, a student ID card, and a TEFL
Certificate of Completion.
*Native
English teachers must have a minimum of two years prior teaching
experience. |
