COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This advanced English
program focuses on written & spoken medical English. The primary goals
are mastery of medical terminology and enhanced communication in
English. Topics include the U.S. health care delivery system,
provider-patient interaction, medical history-taking, case management,
human anatomy & physiology by system, diagnosis and treatment of major
disease states, ethical issues, conference speaking and scientific
publications.

| OBJECTIVES: |

As a result of
participation in this course, students will be able to demonstrate
orally and in writing:

Basic understanding of the U.S. health care delivery system and how
it compares/contrasts with the system in their countries of origin.
-
Increased proficiency in conducting a medical history & physical
exam, treatment planning, and reporting to fellow health care
professionals in English.
-
Increased proficiency in oral presentations, listening comprehension
& written communication in medicine.

METHODS OF
EVALUATION
|
|
Class
attendance is mandatory & participation in group activities, discussions
and field trips is strongly recommended. Students will be evaluated on
one oral presentation (20 %), homework assignments (40%), and classroom
exercises (40%). A score of 75% or better is required to pass this
course.
