The TESOL program at Oklahoma City University is
designed to prepare professionals of both competence and conscience in
the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
The program aims to provide the students with a solid theoretical
foundation and the necessary professional skills in TESOL at different
levels of education (elementary, secondary, tertiary, and adult
literacy) and in different milieus (English as a Foreign Language and
English as a Second Language). The program offers both a Master of Arts
degree and a graduate-level certificate.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION AND ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
MA Degree:
The Master of Arts in TESOL degree is a 36 credit-hour program. With a
broad range of courses, the program aims to equip the students with the
linguistic knowledge, cultural understanding, and pedagogical training
essential to the various aspects of TESOL, including, among other
things, curriculum design, materials development, methodologies,
classroom procedures, and assessment. The program also offers students
practicum opportunities to gain first-hand practical experience in the
field .
Certificate of TESOL:
The certificate is an 18 credit-hour program created especially for
those who do not want to pursue a master's degree but desire credentials
in TESOL that will aid them in gaining employment in TESOL both
domestically and overseas.
Academic Entrance Requirements:
Applicants for either program must have a minimum undergraduate GPA
of 3.00. Students with a GPA slightly below 3.00 may be admitted on a
probational basis. International students are required to have a minimum
TOEFL score of 550 (213 on the Computer-based test). Those with a score
of 500 to 549 will be considered and admitted on a case-by-case basis.

To acquire the degree of Anti in TESOL , a candidate must complete 36
credit-hour graduate coursework and pass a comprehensive or write and
define an MA thesis.

Comprehensive Examination:
During the last
semester of coursework, candidates must take and pass the
Comprehensive Examination.
Thesis Option
In lieu of one
three-hour elective course, a candidate who meets the following
requirements may elect to write a thesis (TESL 6983):
1) Possessing a minimum GPA of 3.75
2) Having completed the Methods of Research course with a grade of
at least an A (not an A-) in the course and an A on the research
proposal
3) (for international students) possessing a minimum TOEFL score of
600, a minimum TWE score of 5, and acceptable performance on a essay
administered by the thesis committee.
FOR CERTIFICATE CANDIDATES:
For certificate
candidates, the following 6 TESOL core courses (18 credit hours) are
the only requirement:
